ukms.or.id – Hyundai Starts Construction of Electric Car Battery Plant in Cikarang, Hyundai Energy Indonesia (HEI), a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group has announced the start of construction of Hyundai’s first battery system factory in Indonesia located in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java.
Built as a result of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia’s collaboration with Hyundai Mobis, the facility will support Indonesia to become an electric vehicle hub in Southeast Asia.
Chang Oug Hong, President Director of Hyundai Energy Indonesia, said that this step was taken through an investment of US$ 60 million. The plant is expected to start producing batteries in the first half of 2024.
“The construction of this battery system factory further emphasizes Hyundai’s commitment to leading electrification in the Indonesian automotive industry. The investment decided has gone through careful and measured considerations from Hyundai’s global principle to ensure the capability of the facility to support the electric vehicle supply chain to the fullest,” Chang Oug Hong said in a press statement to Marketeers.
He also emphasized that the battery system factory aims to ensure a stable supply of electric vehicle batteries for battery electric cars or battery electric vehicles (BEV). This facility is also to strengthen the supply chain in sustainable production activities.
The presence of the facility also emphasizes Hyundai’s commitment to building an electric car ecosystem in Indonesia. By doing so, Hyundai can consistently support Indonesia’s electric car industry and ecosystem in developing the capabilities of the domestic automotive component industry, especially in the electric vehicle sector.
In building its latest plant in Indonesia, Hyundai Motor Group has established Hyundai Energy Indonesia to manage all production activities at the facility. Hyundai Motor Group has also engaged Hyundai Mobis, a key player in the electrification of the global automotive industry, to support the EV PE (Power Electric) system which is the core of electric vehicle technology.
Located on an area of 32,188 square meters, the plant will produce battery systems to be supplied to BEV models made in Indonesia that are expected to be released in the Southeast Asian market by 2024. The component will be optimized with two types of battery cells, namely standard capacity and large capacity for longer distances.

Interestingly, Hyundai through Hyundai Motor Group will also produce the battery cells in Indonesia through a joint venture with LG Energy Solution in the construction of a battery cell factory in Karawang, West Java, which is still under construction.
With its location adjacent to other Hyundai facilities, namely the assembly plant (PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia) and the battery cell factory, the presence of this battery system factory will increase operational and supply chain efficiency.
From there, the electric vehicle production process can run more seamlessly to better answer market needs. That way, the presence of these three Hyundai facilities is expected to encourage Indonesia to become an electric vehicle hub in the Southeast Asia region.
